Picking a floor in a showroom is harder than it sounds. The lighting is different, the samples are tiny, and you're trying to imagine them next to cabinets and walls that are miles away. An in-home flooring consultation flips that around: the samples come to you, and every decision gets made in the rooms where the floor will actually go.
Here's how a Floor Mama visit works, from the first call to the written quote.
Step 1: We talk about how you live
Before we open a sample box, we ask questions. Kids? Dogs? Which rooms get the most sun? Is the kitchen a splash zone? Do you plan to stay five years or twenty? The right floor starts with how you actually use the house, not with what's trending.
Step 2: You see real samples in your own light
We bring options that fit what you told us, from solid and engineered hardwood to laminate and LVP. You can set them on the floor, hold them against your cabinets, and check them in morning and evening light. Colors that look perfect under store lights often look completely different at home. Browse our styles beforehand if you want a head start.
Step 3: We measure and check what's underneath
We measure every room and look at the things that affect the job: the subfloor, existing flooring that has to come out, transitions between rooms, stairs, and moisture in basements. This is what makes an accurate quote possible instead of a guess.
Step 4: You get a clear written quote
You get one number, explained line by line, with a realistic timeline. Take your time. There's no pressure to decide on the spot. If you're comparing quotes, our guide on how much new flooring costs explains what to look for.
How long does an in-home flooring consultation take?
It depends on how many rooms you're doing and how many options you want to see. A single room is quick, and a whole main floor with stairs takes longer. We'll give you a time estimate when we book the visit.
How to prepare
- Know which rooms you're considering, even roughly.
- Save a few photos of floors you like.
- Clear a path to closets and any basement or stair areas so we can measure.
- Have everyone who gets a vote at home, if possible.
- Think about timing: holidays, guests, a move-in date.
Questions worth asking
- Which floor would you pick for this room, and why?
- What prep does my subfloor need?
- What's included in the quote, and what isn't?
- How long will installation take, and can we stay in the house?
- How do I care for this floor? (Every Floor Mama floor comes with our Mama Knows Best care package.)
